As an architectural historian and author of three books about Charleston, South Carolina, I love to share the beauty of its buildings and their stories. In my most recent book, The Allure of Charleston, I celebrate the architectural details, craftsmanship, colors and materials that make the city so distinct and enchanting. From Rainbow Row to grand mansions, Charleston's residences vary widely in style—Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Victorian, and, of course, the iconic single house. A stroll past buildings is a walk through time, offering insights into history. Delving into the city's past from its beginnings as a walled colonial outpost through its zenith as one of the richest cities in 18th- and 19th century America to its fall in the Civil War and post-war preservation movement, the tour covers more than three centuries of history. With so many buildings that have survived war, fire, earthquake, tornadoes, as well as modern threats of demolition, Charleston’s unique streetscape is miraculously intact.
The tour explores the Old and Historic District, Charleston's oldest neighborhood which features a remarkably unaltered streetscape lined with exceptionally well-preserved buildings. - Our journey through time starts at the Four Corners of Law, where colonial government and church buildings form the civic heart of Charleston. - A walk down Meeting Street offers an opportunity to view centuries-old houses in a variety of styles and degrees of opulence. - We will also pass the grand mansions along South and East Battery that create a majestic impression beside the harbor where many historic events transpired. -We will stop to learn the history behind Charleston's famed Rainbow before traveling along a street lined by many of the city's earliest surviving residences. - The tour includes a stroll along quiet lanes rarely visited by tourists where 18th- and 19th-century houses and garden gates convey the Southern charm and fine craftsmanship for which Charleston is renowned.
