The first Jewish Commodore, Uriah Levy, is remembered for ending the practice of flogging in the Navy. Less known was his fight against antisemitism, whether that fight was in a courtroom or with his fists. Levy's story includes pirates, founding fathers, and tenacity in the face of prejudice. His story will have you laughing and cheering as we enjoy sites along the beautiful Delaware River. We will finish with a drink at A Man Full of Trouble Tavern, Philadelphia's only original pre-revolutionary tavern still standing.
We will start with Levy's childhood, seeing where he grew up on Elfreth's Alley, the country's oldest continuously lived-on residential street. Like Levy, though, we won't stay away from the water for long, continuing our walk to Penn's Landing and exploring the Delaware River Waterfront while enjoying stories from Levy's always noble, but often bonkers life and career. We will finish with a drink at A Man Full of Trouble Tavern, Philadelphia's only original pre-revolutionary tavern still standing.
